The book is not really a very good tool for reinforcing the concepts in the text. I needed something with a loittle more "meat" to it that I could use as a tool for preparing some assessment matetials. It was really a waste of money. It seems like busy work.

This book examines the mentalities of various communities within a district of Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). Focusing in particular on white administrators and missionaries in the Melsetter District, it combines linguisitc/lexical analysis with historical interpretation, in an attempt to reconstruct what whites and Africans actually meant by the words and practices they used in interactions with each other. Jeater provides a detailed study of translation work in Mt Selinda, an evangelical mission; it also examines formal and informal court hearings, to contrast the perceptions and meanings ascribed to cases by white adjudicators and by African participants. This leads into an initial attempt to map out the birth of ethnography in Southern Rhodesia and to contrast it with anthropology in South Africa. By the 1920s, Africans' expertise in their own languages and culture had been usurped by self-referential white linguists and ethnographers. This account suggests that there is a tendency among archive-oriented historians to overestimate how far white missionaries and administrators really understood what Africans said and did. In addition to making a contribution to our empirical knowledge of Zimbabwe's history, the book focuses on how and why investigators first began to make claims to such knowledge. It urges those studying African history to be self-reflective about their practice, examining the historical roots of their claims to expertise. such claims

Mission-educated Africans who aspired to elements of European material culture experienced these transformations most directly. Individually and collectively, they met the barriers erected by an increasingly restive white settler population and Native administration. This book details the strikes organized by students and parents, struggles over curricula, efforts of African teachers to improve their professional status, and conflicts between colonial officials regarding administrative control over schools and development programs. Summers reveals the ways in which these tensions and conflicts allowed select groups of Africans to reconfigure and, to some extent, appropriate aspects of European power.

Highly recommended!

I really like this book. For those of you who are similar with the Suzuki Violin Technique, I think these Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley utilize a similar technique. The first one-quarter of the book is review and mastery of previous material, to reinforce all of the concepts that should have been learned in the First grade. But, by page 174 of 500, it's second grade material.

I think that re-mastery of previous material makes a student strong and confident to explore more advanced concepts.

Great Scott Foresman Math Book

We homes chool our kids and I have been looking for a 2nd grade math book that wouldn't break the bank and would give clear lessons. I have purchased other books in the past and they are either too low of a level, although designated as the grade level we purchased it for, or the instructions are so wacky, you need a mathematician to decipher them for you. lol. So I recommend this book highly. You will get a lot out of it. The first part is 1st grade review, then it goes into what a 2nd grader needs to know following common core standards and then by the end of the book, you are getting into 3rd grade material. A great fit for our family. And the book we received was immaculate. No writing, no damage to the cover or any of the pages. It came a bit slower than I had anticipated, but overall, a great purchase, great seller.
