Don't waste your money!

This "new math" is the one of the WORST systems I have ecountered as an educator. This company has "enticed" school districts all over the country to adopt this system when it hasn't been successfully piloted anywhere and has no corroborating data to support their math "theories". The textsbooks were dated "2009" LAST YEAR when we received them (in 2008). The textbooks are also full of spelling errors, mathematical errors, and the teacher texts and students texts differ not only in some content but even in the page numbers. It is confusing to students and kids I had that loved math before, were reduced to tears because of this curriculums confusing and ambiguous ways of "teaching".
If only we could turn back the clock and get our old math program back- FOR A FRACTION OF THE COST!

Horrible

How can I describe this system? Okay. You live in the first house on the street. Your friend's house is the last house, on the same street. You need to walk from your house to your friend's house. What is your route? If your response is anything other than "Walk from my house to the end of the block"..this is NOT the book for you.
This system would teach you how to get there...eventually...but the directions would, likely, include walking around the block 2 times in one direction, then 6 times in the other, crossing the street twice, then clicking your heels together 3 times...and would require you to have a compass, map, and emergency survival kit with you, at all times.
My son's school uses this system and I have never seen anything so convoluted and utterly confusing in my entire life. The above comparison is no exaggeration. They take the most basic equation and give you the most roundabout, complicated way of solving it. My son had, previously, tested into a "gifted" math program and his standardized math scores were always between 587 - 591 (out of 600). When the class began using this system, his score dropped to 371. Last week, he got an F on a test. The questions were BASIC equations he could solve, with his eyes closed, in 3rd grade. I went over it with him...and he was completely and utterly confused. In tears! After 5 minutes of teaching him the UN-Envision way to solve the problems, I gave him the same test, changing names and numbers, and he got 100% correct.

Challenging!

We homechooled our daughter abroad for one year and the distance learning school send us this textbook along with the rest of the 5th grade curriculum and I have to say that even though it was challenging, it made us sometimes go out of our ways to learn how to teach it. When we came back to the states she went for 6th grade to a school where kids were one year ahead in Math. No problem! Since the beginning she was one of the top students in her classroom.
Was it hard, Yes! But we had to adjust.
