Some nice contents, but poor exercise sections

Since this is the official textbook of California for 4th graders (the series stays throughout the primary school years), another way of describing this book is that it is a monopoly. Given that nature, it is actually not that bad. It is full of colorful pictures and illustrations, attempts have been made throughout the book to present 'practical', real life examples, and it is evident that thoughts have been put about the pace of progress in the book.
Granted, the exercises (re-teaching and practice tests) are actually *very* easy, but not challenging enough for more capable students. Many math books sections in exercise that are categorized as 'easy', 'moderate' and 'tough' (or something along that line). This book could have used a similar technique.
There are some questionable math contents for a 4th grader in this book, for example, introduction to Solid and Transformation Geometries. Both are much advanced topic and should wait for high, or at least middle, schools (as is done in India and China). But that is more a reflection of the syllabus, than the contents.

My name is Anna and I am a third grade teacher. Envision math is the absolute worst and most unproductive and ineffective math program I have ever experienced while teaching. My students (and I) end up more confused and frustrated with this program than we do feeling confident and prepared. I honestly believe that this program was created with no thought or consideration for students that need differentiated instruction, despite their "suggestions" at the end of the lessons. This program makes me sick, and parents have never had any positive things to say about it. As teachers, we are supposed to implement the lesson effectively. Following that, we should be sending home homework that SUPPORTS what we taught in class. This program does not follow these guidelines whatsoever. Parents email me week after week complaining about how confusing and frustrating the book examples/explanations provide. Unfortunately, as a teacher, I do not have the authority to tell parents that I absolutely DESPISE the program, and hardly EVER follow the guidelines and explanations that the books provides. The end-of-topic tests hardly EVER align with what the book teaches. I think it is an absolute horrendous approach to implementing interactive and hands-on learning for newly learned math concepts. I teach third grade using this bogus program, so it is extremely disappointing to see its ineffectiveness, considering the fact that third grade concepts (that must me mastered) are 70% NEW (rather than relearned and accessed from prior knowledge.) I would NEVER recommend this program to any school. I hope my comment has shed light on the envision program and encourages schools to research other programs before ever agreeing to use the envision program.

Good grade 4 texbook, could be better

I am largely including my review of the accompanying Grade 4 workbook, since the two books cover the same material.
Overall, the problems are solid and mostly grade-appropriate. I do feel that the enVision Math curriculum in the higher elementary grades (4, 5, and 6) sometimes skimps on computational practice in multiplication and long division in favor of introducing some other topics that may not be necessary for that grade. E.G., I think chapters 1 through 8 ought to take up a good 50% or more of fourth grade, but then you wouldn't ever get to some of the other topics included near the end of the book, like probability or data graphs, but that would be OK in my opinion. One thing I really do like is the introduction of basic fractions even in the really early grades (like second) and how to use fractions and decimals starting in third grade and continuing on up. So you no longer "spring" fractions for the first time upon a student in fourth or fifth grade, as was the case 20 - 30 years ago.
As I wrote in my review of the grade 2 workbook, the curriculum reminds me a bit of the Singapore method in that they introduce each topic across all grade levels, but the problems just get harder and the numbers larger. For instance, in second grade you might have multiplication presented as repeated addition (3x4 means "three groups of four" = 4 + 4 + 4), but by fourth or fifth grade you are doing longer computational problems with multiplication.
Overall, it's a decent textbook. However, I would recommend supplementing it with another book that focuses specifically on more long multiplication and long division review.
