Solid Grade 2 Math Workbook

I could not disagree more with the one-star reviewer, California Teacher.
First off, I am a math tutor with nearly 25 years of experience, as well as an undergraduate and two graduate degrees in math. I have seen just about everything when it comes to math curricula in my tutoring experience, ranging from the "drill and kill" Saxon-style exercises to the "fluffy, new math" discovery-based series. Believe me, I have seen my fair share of awful math texts. However, enVision Math is not one of those. Rather, it is much more akin to an attempt to take the world-renowned Singaporean methods for teaching elementary mathematics and apply them to the US market.
This book is solid, in my opinion. It has plenty of exercises that require the student to compute (to satisfy those who like the traditional pencil-to-paper exercises that dominated math education 30 and 40 years ago), as well as an emphasis on creating concrete and pictorial depictions of what numbers really mean (to allow students to really internalize the base 10 decimal system). I seriously cannot see what this other teacher is complaining about. Furthermore, the objectives for Grade 2 are spot-on, ranging from double-digit addition & subtraction with & without regrouping to triple-digit problems, to telling time and evaluating currency, to understanding symmetry and measurement, to finally ending with an early introduction to multiplication and basic times tables. I have seen plenty of watered-down Grade 2 math books that do not attempt to advance kids through nearly as much material as enVision does. (It would also be suitable for an accelerated or gifted ed Grade 1 classroom.) Rather, the enVision authors hold a high bar for what they expect children to master at each grade level.
In politics, I figure if an interviewer is purported to be "too easy" and simultaneously "too hard" on the interviewee by the far right and far left pundits, then chances are the interviewer struck just the right balance and was right down the middle. I feel likewise about this workbook and series. Those who are used to extremely fluffy, discovery-based math will find it too "hard" or "boring" because of its emphasis on computation, while those who prefer computational drills alone will find the pictorial and concrete explanations too "light." In reality, both types of explanation are needed to ensure a solid mathematical understanding in young children. Remarkably similar to the Singapore 1B and 2A workbooks, I think enVision has struck just the right balance with this book.

great workbook

I love this practice book. It is great for homework. It reteaches what is taught in class. When I taught in public school, we used these envision math practice books everyday. It is a great way to reinforce the concepts taught in class and it determines if the child understands the concept. I am using it as a homework book for my homeschool kids
